Provenance: Sale, Maître Boisgirard, Hôtel des ventes Drouot, Paris, 28/06/1973, catalogue no. 73.
This object is a situla, a bronze cult vessel suspended by two brackets, used as part of the daily ritual in Egyptian temples to contain and pour lustral water during offering ceremonies. The truncated cone shape tapering towards the bottom, characteristic of this type of object, and the brown and green patina bear witness to long conservation. The situla is one of the most common ritual instruments used in Late Egyptian and Greco-Roman temples, testifying to the continuity of cult practices over a very long period.
