Description
- Egyptian bas-relief with figures in profile Carved sand. Traces of polychromy. Egypt, Karnak, 18th dynasty. H: 30 cm; W: 40 cm Provenance: Sale, Maîtres Rheims et Laurin, Hôtel des ventes Drouot, Paris, 17/11/1966, catalogue no. 393. This fragment illustrates an offering scene typical of New Kingdom Egypt, where the figures are organised according to a hierarchical and synthetic principle. The main figure, depicted in profile, holds an elongated object, probably a folded cloth or textile offering, an element associated with purification rituals and the care given to the divine statue or the deceased. The presence of a second figure, partially visible behind the first, is typical of Egyptian art: the figures are juxtaposed and superimposed to express the participation of several officiants without resorting to a realistic perspective. This construction suggests a succession of actions while maintaining the legibility of the main gesture. The repetition of hands and profiles evokes a chain of offerings or a procession, with each individual taking part in the same ritual act.
