Description
Winged scarab known as the "heart scarab". Green, brown and turquoise glazed earthenware, marks of time. Egypt, Saite period H: 5 cm; W: 15.2 cm Provenance: Sale by Maître Boisgirard, Hôtel des ventes Drouot, Paris, 28/06/1973, no. 24 The winged heart scarab is one of the most important amulets in the Egyptian repertoire. Associated with the solar god Khepri - whose name means "he who becomes" - it symbolises the perpetual rebirth of the sun and the eternal cycle of life. The dung beetle, rolling its ball of dung, evoked for the Egyptians the daily movement of the sun across the sky. The winged variant, with its outstretched wings evoking the rise of the soul, is a particularly powerful symbol of transformation and elevation. The glazed earthenware in shades of blue-green and turquoise, colours associated with the Nile and regeneration, reinforces the sacred dimension of this object. The quality of the modelling and the preservation of the polychromy make this a remarkable example of the art of earthenware in the Saite period.
