Description
- Standing Osiris on a removable cubic base Black stone (schist?), some chips and small missing pieces, marks of time. Egypt, late Ptolemaic period or 19th century. 17 cm Provenance: Sale, Maître Maurice Rheims, Drouot Paris, 17/11/1966, catalogue no. 366. This statuette represents Osiris in a standing mummiform position, his arms crossed over his chest, holding the royal insignia and wearing the atef crown. The plastic treatment of the figure is in keeping with the conventions of Egyptian votive statuary from the Late Period and the Ptolemaic period. However, certain clumsinesses in the hieroglyphic inscriptions on the reverse suggest that we should be cautious about the precise dating of the object - whether it is a late Ptolemaic production or a copy made during the 19th century in the tradition of European Egyptomania, a question that can only be answered by in-depth analysis.
