Provenance: Maître Rheims public sale, Paris, 17/11/1966, lot 369
The god is represented in the form of a seated cynocephalus, his hands resting on his knees, his genitals visible, on a stepped pedestal whose lower part seems to narrow. The fur is indicated by fine, regular incisions on the body, in a sober, precise treatment. This type refers to the small votive images of Thoth, the god of writing, calculation, the moon and knowledge, which were particularly popular in the Late Period. These statuettes could be placed in sanctuaries or used for private devotion, where offerings and prayers were addressed to the deity in order to obtain protection, knowledge or intercession in the afterlife. The pedestal may have been part of a larger device or may have been intended to fit into a complementary base, although this cannot be said with any certainty.
