Description
- Oenochoe
with incised decoration of two fish and a bird
Beige, brown and coppery terracotta.
Etruria, Italy. 8th - 7th century BC
30 x 20.5 cm
Provenance: Public sale, Hôtel des ventes Drouot, Paris, 03/11/1972, catalogue no. 65.
This oenochoe belongs to the Etruscan production of the impasto type, a clay ceramic whose lustrous surface shows characteristic variations in colour - from brown to black with reddish highlights - depending on the firing conditions. The precursor of bucchero nero, buccheid impasto is distinguished by its thinner turned walls and incised decoration, which herald the great Etruscan ceramic tradition of the 7th and 6th centuries. The decoration of two fish and a bird, treated with economy and stylisation, bears witness to the sense of formal synthesis typical of Etruscan potters of this archaic period.
