The lekane is a container with a lid used in the Greek world to store perfumes, jewellery or ointments, often associated with women. In the 4th century BC, workshops in Magna Graecia - the area of southern Italy colonised by the Greeks - produced a richly iconographic red-figure pottery, drawing on both mythological repertory and scenes of everyday feminine life. The scroll decoration and the female figure on the lid are part of this tradition.
