Greco-Buddhist art from Gandhara. 100 to 400 A.D.
H: 6.5 cm; W: 5.5 cm
Provenance: acquired in a public auction from Maître Boisgirard, Paris, late 1970s
Gandhara, conquered by Alexander the Great in 327 BC, became the crossroads between the Greek and Buddhist worlds after his death. This encounter gave rise to an original syncretic art form, of which stucco - a flexible material that allows great freedom of modelling - is one of the preferred media. This male head, with its moustache and curly hair treated with vigour, illustrates the persistence of Hellenistic portraiture in the iconography of Gandhara, where artists depicted both secular figures and those from the Buddhist pantheon.
