Sanza, or lamellophones, played an important role in the musical and ceremonial practices of the Luba people. Used for wakes, community celebrations, historical accounts or consultations linked to lineage memory, they accompanied speech, song and certain forms of ritual mediation. The sculpted heads reinforced the symbolic value of the instrument and could evoke ancestral figures or complementary principles. The combination of male and female faces here reflects a search for balance and duality, integrated into a composition of restrained presence and balanced volumes.
