Description
Female figure
crowned and kneeling
Wood, metal, cowrie shells, pearls, shells and various materials, old thick brown patina resulting from ritual projections in situ
Fon, Benin
40 x 18 cm
This kneeling female figure is part of the ritual practices of the Fon world, where charged statuettes acted as protective supports or intermediaries with invisible powers. The attentive posture, half-closed eyes and concentrated attitude reinforce the internalized character of the work, probably linked to practices of protection, divination or intercession.
The cowrie shells, metal rings and accumulated materials add to the sculpture's symbolic charge. The ritual projections visible on the surface bear witness to prolonged use in situ, while the accumulation of elements gives the whole a dense, organic aesthetic, akin to certain contemporary assemblages.
