Bambara dance crests were used in community ceremonies and ritual events linked to initiation societies. Certain figures combined several animal attributes to evoke the forces of the bush and protective powers. This crest's long tubular snout, erect horns and highly refined construction give it a particularly graphic silhouette and a strong sculptural presence.
