Dogon sculpture draws its strength from a radical formal economy, in which each volume is reduced to its essence. This figure is a particularly accomplished expression of this: the ovoid head, smooth and closed, gives nothing away - no eyes, no mouth, no scarification - and gives the whole an almost metaphysical abstraction. The cylindrical torso, the angular arms pressed against the body and the slightly bent knees create a vertical architecture of great rigour, where the tension between mass and emptiness produces a sculptural presence of striking modernism.
