Sirigé dance mask with openwork crest in four registers Wood, old patina and marks of use, natural pigments. Dogon, Mali 180 x 20 cm The Sirigé mask, or 'tiered mask', appears during the Dama ceremonies, rituals symbolically reintegrating the deceased into the world of the ancestors. Each layer of the crest symbolises a level of knowledge, a stage reflecting the individual's rise through the initiation process. An object of transmission and memory, it embodies the continuity of the lineage and the permanence of knowledge within Dogon society.
