This Oshe Shango sceptre is associated with the cult of the god Shango, the Yoruba divinity of thunder and lightning, a symbol of power and authority. These objects were worn during ceremonies by initiates or priestesses to honour the divinity and demonstrate his presence.
The female figure at the top, seated in a codified posture on her heels, refers to the priestesses consecrated to Shango, who played a central role in the rituals. This position, common in Yoruba art, underlines the link between mastery of the body and ritual function.
The ensemble is distinguished by the balance between the verticality of the handle and the sculpted presence of the figure, reflecting an object that is both ceremonial and emblematic of sacred power.
