The Mumuye people of north-east Nigeria developed a sculptural tradition of unparalleled formal invention. This figure is a particularly striking expression of that tradition: the large protruding ears, elongated neck, cantilevered arms and cascading leg joints create a taut, almost surreal silhouette on the borderline between abstraction and figuration. The sobriety of the modelling and the depth of the patina further enhance the graphic power of the whole.
