This Virgin was one of the first to be produced as part of the evangelisation movement in Central Africa, where local sculptors adopted Christian models. The standing posture and the veil covering the head are reminiscent of European iconography, translated here into an African formal language.
The elongated treatment of the body, the simplification of the volumes and the frontal aspect bear witness to this adaptation, in which Western codes are integrated without breaking with local traditions. The work is distinguished by the sobriety of its composition and the gentleness of its expression, in a work where two cultural universes meet.
