Description
Cubist mask with two ram's horns. Wood with brown and honey patina, remnants of white pigments, internal use mark. Songye, Democratic Republic of Congo. 37 x 27 x 18 cm Based on information provided by the current owner, former Barasch collection, Chicago, USA Kifwebe masks, shared by the Songye and neighbouring Eastern Luba populations, form a body of work in which anthropomorphic forms can incorporate a variety of zoomorphic elements. While figures inspired by antelopes, monkeys and other animals are well documented, the presence of ram's horns is uncommon. The contrast between the light and dark areas, combined with the angular treatment of the face and the sagittal crest typical of male masks, gives this example an aesthetic of tension and power, while underlining the singular character of this formal variation.
