Tabwa, Democratic Republic of Congo
28 x 10 cm
The Tabwa live in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, in a vast territory bounded to the north by Kalemie, to the south by Moliro and to the east by the western shore of Lake Tanganyika. Their statuary, one of the most coherent and refined in Central Africa, is mainly devoted to the figures of clan-founding ancestors, whose possession and veneration ensured the authority of chiefs and the continuity of lineages. The hands placed on the lower thighs are a codified gesture, symbolising the link between the holders of these figures and their predecessors.
The sobriety of the modelling, the youthful chest and the concentrated, inward-looking face give this figure a presence that is both restrained and deeply inhabited.
