Description
Four totem pole elements Polychrome wood, marks of use and age, a few small chips Tsimshian / Tlingit tradition, North West Coast, first half 20th century 18 x 7 cm These carved fragments are part of the plastic tradition of the peoples of the American and Canadian north-west coasts, where ceremonial houses, poles and architectural elements were decorated with totemic figures painted with blue-green, red, black and brown pigments. The stylised faces, deeply marked circular eyes and interlocking figures refer to a formal vocabulary characteristic of the Tsimshian and Tlingit traditions. The overall graphic construction is particularly expressive, alternating geometric volumes, anthropomorphic figures and symmetry. These elements retain a strong visual presence and reflect an immediately identifiable aesthetic of the north-west coast.
