"The only advantage that a psychoanalyst has the right to take from his position... is to remember with Freud that in his matter, the artist always precedes him".
Jacques Lacan, Hommage fait à Marguerite Duras, du ravissement de Lol V.Stein, Paris, 2001
FR
Self-taught French artist Edi Dubien is known for his deeply poetic and movingly human works, which explore themes of identity, childhood and the relationship between humans and nature. In her works, children with melancholy eyes, animals (often made-up) and plants develop relationships of exchange, cooperation, metamorphosis and, certainly, consolation.
Edi Dubien celebrates otherness and the freedom to be oneself in a gentle way - the very thing we need most in an increasingly normalised and divisive world. A hymn to love and life.
The figure of the child is a recurring theme in Edi Dubien's work. "It's obviously central, but it's also about man coming into his own out of chaos," he explains, like a key to his own biography. Portraits dominate his work, in which, like self-portraits, the artist hides and shows himself at the same time, delivering without concession the story of a child who had to tame his past in order to unfold.

Edi Dubien, a self-taught French artist, is known for his deeply poetic and movingly human works, which explore themes related to identity, childhood, and the relationship between humans and nature. In his works, children with melancholic gazes, animals often adorned with makeup, and plants develop relationships of exchange, cooperation, metamorphosis, and, undoubtedly, consolation.
With great gentleness-something we undoubtedly need most in the face of an increasingly homogenising and divisive world-Edi Dubien celebrates otherness and the freedom to be oneself. A hymn to love and life.
The figure of the child recurs constantly in Edi Dubien's work. "Obviously, it is central; it is also about the man who finds fulfilment emerging from chaos," he explains, offering a key to understanding his own biography. Portraits dominate his work, where, like self-portraits, the artist both hides and reveals himself, uncompromisingly telling the story of a child who had to come to terms with his past in order to flourish.
