Description
Barthélémy TOGUO Alcoholic Blackout - 2003 Watercolour on paper Signed and dated lower right "2003 B. Toguo Titled lower centre "Alcoholic Blackout". 29 x 38 cm Watercolor on paper; signed and dated lower right "2003 B. Toguo"; titled lower centre "Alcoholic Blackout". 11.41 x 14.96 in. Provenance: Galerie Anne de Villepoix, Paris Acquired from the latter by the current owner FR Born in Cameroon in 1967, Barthélémy Toguo studied art first in Abidijan, then in Grenoble and Düsseldorf. Although the artist has become a European citizen, his roots are nonetheless deeply rooted in his native country. In 2013, he set up the Bandjoun Station Foundation, which takes in artists and researchers to develop local artistic initiatives. Rather than democratising art in Cameroon, Barthélémy Toguo's initiative is a genuine fusion of two arts, since the idea is "to marry classical African art with contemporary world art, and to exhibit these works in the same space, without ghettoisation or hierarchy of value". In the late 1990s, Barthélémy Toguo began exhibiting his work around the world (New York, London, Paris, Miami). In 1998, the artist began working in watercolour. The work presented here is part of the Dream Catchers series, on which Toguo worked in particular from 2002 to 2003. The result of his various travels and experiences, the series appears like a logbook evoking reflections on everyday life. Half-anthropomorphic, half-zoomorphic figures enliven the composition, reflecting the idea of flux and the cycle of life that is a recurring theme in his work. The large-format works in this series have a spectacular spontaneity of execution, and seem to be drawn with a single stroke in coloured watercolours.
