Description
Model of the Korean turtle ship “Geobukseon” bearing the inscription: “the world’s first armed junk, 1592”. In its glass display case. Modern piece H.: 36.5 W.: 46.5 D.: 25.5 cm (top left section of the display case detached, minor damage and missing parts) The turtle ship (Korean: Geobukseon 거북선) is a Korean warship used notably during the Imjin War in 1592, at the Battle of Sacheon[1] against a Japanese attack. The first mention of a turtle ship is, in fact, found in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty from 1415, which describes a battle between one such vessel and a Japanese ship. However, this type of ship appears to have been forgotten until it was rediscovered and refined by Yi Sun-sin, the famous Korean admiral and national hero. (Wikipedia)
