The Duke and Duchess of Chartres, later the Duke and Duchess of Orléans, travelled to Toulon in the spring of 1776. The Duke (later Philippe Egalité), who had been vying for the admiralcy of his father-in-law the Duke of Penthièvre, had been authorised by his cousin King Louis XVI to serve in the Royal Navy, where he hoped to make a name for himself. He was to embark on Le Solitaire, which he had just been given command of, and which was on manoeuvres at Cape Saint Vincent. After fifteen weeks of exercises in the Atlantic, the Duc de Chartres returned to Paris in August. The Duchess went to Genoa to visit her grandfather, the Duke of Modena.
