INFORMATION: This photograph comes from Paul Éluard’s personal collection. Professor Jacques Millot details the provenance and origin of these prints: “from Éluard’s library, where these photographs probably served as inspiration for the composition of his poems. Lot No. 458 from the Swiss auction of 13–14 May 1958… This is also likely to be an early draft illustration, smaller in size than the one that was published [in the original 1937 edition]”.
This photograph bears the stamp “Man Ray, 8 rue du Val de Grâce, Paris 5e, France, Danton 92-25” on the reverse (a stamp used between 1929 and 1940)
