Description
Bronze mortar with two turned handles, a flared body decorated with a bust of the Virgin and Child in a medallion on one side and Saint Anthony of Padua on the other, upright acanthus leaves, inscriptions; beneath the rim, ‘OPVS ANTONII PICININI .F.’; on a frieze below, GIVSEPPE MARIA LAMA / ANNO D[OMI]NI MDCCXXIV, a Christ monogram within a sun above Saint Anthony of Padua.
Northern Italy, Padua or Venice, first quarter of the 18th century, 1724
H_ 25 cm
A smaller mortar with a similar profile, also decorated with a bust of the Virgin and Child and a figure of Saint Anthony of Padua, is held in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv. M.1-1945). When compared with an example on display at the Civic Museum of Brescia, dated 1717, it is suggested as possibly being from Padua or Venice.
