The ‘Daumenkrug’, or thumb jug, first appeared in Germany in the early 17th century, at a time when beer was a popular and culturally significant drink. Most often made of earthenware or wood, and fitted with a pewter rim, these objects were deeply rooted in local social life, whilst also serving a practical purpose. Our example follows this folk tradition, whilst standing out for its rich ornamentation of interlacing patterns and friezes, typical of German production.
Our example is clearly distinct from the more common German salt-glazed stoneware pieces, an example of which can be viewed at the Louvre Museum under the reference MRR 109.
