Pieter DE WITTE, known as Pietro CANDIDO (1548–1628) Madonna and Child Oil on copper panel. H_20 cm W_15 cm Of Flemish origin, Pieter de Witte was an artist of the late Renaissance. He distinguished himself in religious painting, portraiture, mythological scenes, tapestry and miniature painting. Born in Bruges to a tapestry-maker father, his family moved to Florence when he was 10 years old. His name was then Italianised to Pietro Candido. Trained first by his father and then by a master of the Florentine guild, he received commissions from the Medici family, which launched his career. In the 1570s, he was a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence alongside Michelangelo, Bronzino and Cellini. In Rome, inspired by Mannerism, he worked with Vasari on the frescoes in the Vatican Palace whilst also carrying out several private commissions. He eventually left Tuscany for Munich, where he worked for the court of William IV and Maximilian I. His name was then Germanised to ‘Candid’. This Madonna and Child is known from a chiselled engraving by Raphael Sadeler (1555–1628).
