Description
A very fine set of six queen-style armchairs with flat backs, crafted from beech wood carved with flowers and leafy stems, featuring gilded decoration on a lacquered background. The undulating backrest is flanked by curved armrests with cuffs; the supports are whip-shaped. The scalloped apron rests on arched legs finished with an acanthus scroll. Upholstered in fabric featuring a design of pomegranates and foliage on a red ground, edged with domed brass studs. Paris. Louis XV period. After qualifying as a master on 17 April 1754, he set up shop on Rue de Cléry and gradually built up the reputation that led to his appointment in 1777 to the service of the Garde-meuble. This master craftsman produced a significant number of fine, distinctive chairs, which are often characterised by their unusually generous proportions. Whilst the majority of his output relates to the Louis XVI period, Jean-Baptiste Boulard also produced, in his early years, some very fine Louis XV chairs, well-balanced and of great elegance, a few examples of which have appeared on the auction market in recent years.
