José Miguel de Roxas, Count of Casa Rojas and Marquis del Bosque, was the son of Captain Nicolas de Rojas y Espinosa Blanqueto, founder of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cadiz, and Maria Luisa Pérez de Sarrio y Ruiz de Davalos, an amateur painter. Born in Alicante on 27 June 1786, he moved to Cadiz at a very young age, where he joined the Academy of Languages in 1797.
Between 1800 and 1805, he studied philosophy, theology, ethics and fine arts. In July 1807, he presented himself as a "teacher of the noble art of painting" and focused his work mainly on
miniatures.
When war broke out, he took part in the battles of Aranjuez and Almonacid. From 1810 to 1814, he served under General Lacy and took part in the Andalusian campaign, before being promoted to captain at the end of 1814.
In 1816, he was appointed week butler, and in 1817, lieutenant-colonel of infantry in the Valencey regiment. He was awarded the first-class silver cross of the Royal and Military Order of Saint-Ferdinand. That same year, he applied for the position of chamber painter, but was unsuccessful.
He then submitted a miniature entitled Portrait of a Young Man to the Académie, for which he was appointed
academician of merit on 19 January 1817, then shortly afterwards, academician of honour. José Miguel de
Roxas subsequently married Maria del Rosario Catalina Canicia y Pascual de Riquelme, daughter of the Marquis del Bosque.
The Prado Museum holds two miniatures by this artist.
