Description
Dominique DONCRE (1743-1820)
Portrait of a knight of the order of Saint-Michel and his wife
Pair of paintings.
Old restorations.

Provenance: Philocale sale, Olivet 25 October 2014, no. 98.
The costume worn by the knight is that granted by Louis XV in 1766 and described as "a uniform garment consisting of a large black silk coat, the full habit of the same fabric, the front curls of the coat covered with blue moire, and an aigrette of black and blue feathers on the hat".
covered with blue moire, and an aigrette of black and blue feathers on the hat". Attached to the right shoulder, the black moiré cord with the cross completes the ceremonial garb.
Two miniatures that can also be attributed to Doncre, who is also known to have practised the art of the small portrait, were sold at Hôtel Drouot on 10 April 1992 by Me Pescheteau Badin-Ferrien under numbers 30 and 45 (miniatures on ivory, each 5.5 cm in diameter). The miniature of the Chevalier is now in the Cabinet des dessins et miniatures of P & M-T P. (Literature: Benoît de Fauconpret, Les Chevaliers de Saint-Michel, 2007.
We would like to thank Laurent Hugues for suggesting this attribution and Pierre Papeloux for providing information for this notice.
On this subject, see the article "Un peintre redécouvert et ses miniatures oubliées : Dominique Doncre", which cites at least two of his miniatures: Portrait of the artist and Portrait of his brother.
Representations painted under Louis XV and Louis XVI of knights in the ceremonial robes of the Order of Saint-Michel are few and far between. The most famous portrait is that of the sculptor Pigalle, in 1770, pastel, 90 x 73 cm, kept in the Louvre Museum.
We also know of a small oil on copper (23.20 x 19 cm) by Kymli in 1789 in the Reiss-Engelhorn Museum in Mannheim and its copy on wood (24.50 x 20 cm) produced in 1811 by Jacques-Joseph Duhen (1748-1840) and sold at auction by Van Ham on 18 June 2014, and an anonymous medium-sized oval portrait that has been sold several times, including in Lyon on 12 November 2006.
