Description
INDIA, Naga, Nagaland A weathered, carved wooden panel depicting a stylised elephant carrying on its back a howdah housing an anthropomorphic figure. (Signs of wear and some damage.) Height: 55 cm; Width: 43 cm The Nagas are an ethnic group on the border between north-eastern India and Burma, comprising some thirty tribes; they were hunter-gatherers and great warriors with a reputation as ‘headhunters’. They lived in villages consisting of traditional huts and remained attached to their ancient traditions, close to nature, and to their animist culture. Their living conditions have changed, but they remain attached to their culture and village life, with woodcarvers crafting traditional pieces featuring their tribe’s emblems: the Calao, a bird; the Gaur, a semi-domesticated bovine… which were collected locally and feature in this collection.
