Description

CHRISTOFLE & Cie. Silver-plated serving spoon on a blackened wooden stand. The spoon has a broad bowl, a handle shaped like a stylised dog at the point where it joins the tang, and a mascaron depicting a bearded man surmounted by a cobra at its tip. The attachment point of the bowl is shaped like a bird’s claw. The silversmith’s hallmark: (“OC” and a chess knight). Signature in full: “CHRISTOFLE”. Explanatory label beneath the base. Inscription (on the plate): “I thought you might be interested in this piece; I am sending it to you with my best wishes for 1978. Bouilhet”. This piece was produced by Christofle based on a Roman hoard comprising 70 silverware items dating from the 1st century BC, which was discovered in Hildesheim, a small town in Lower Saxony (on display at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin). In 1870, the Marquise de la PAIVA commissioned a service based on this design. This spoon was designed by ROSSIGNEUX, taking its inspiration from an oil lamp base from the Hildesheim hoard.
