BAYONNE, 1743 Heavy silver hand-held candlestick with a moulded rounded base resting on a crossbar. Beautiful decorative handle on the top and clasp, with the engraving ‘Js LAVIE’ on the reverse. Hallmark for BAYONNE, 1720–50. Common guild hallmark for BAYONNE, 1743 (crowned ‘P’). Master silversmith’s mark: Pierre DE LANE (initials ‘PDL’), born in 1685 and admitted to the guild in 1715. Base diameter: 13.2 cm. Length: 21.7 cm. Weight: 326.6 grams. Fine hallmarks. Thanks to Mr Jean Clarke of DROMENTIN for identifying the hallmarks.
