Description
CHRISTOFLE – ‘EMPIRE’ model (GRATEBOESSE). A set of three salt cellars and their shovels, crafted from silver-plated metal in a shuttle shape, with white crystal interiors. Each salt cellar features a neoclassical decoration of lozenges, foliage, small flowers and palmettes. Set on circular, ringed bases. The backs of the spatulas (salt scoops) form a lozenge pattern embellished with scrolls and small flowers; the interiors of the lozenges feature the so-called “gratteboessé” finish. Hallmarks of the silversmith’s workshop: (“CC” and scales), used between 1844 and 1935. Signatures in full: “CHRISTOFLE”. Dimensions of salt cellars: H: 2.5 cm. L: 8.1 cm. D: 4.5 cm. Internal dimensions: H: 1.8 cm / L: 7 cm / W: 4 cm Length of scoops: 9 cm. Produced over a period of approximately five years, between 1908 and 1913, this is a rare model in the company’s catalogue. The technique known as ‘gratteboessé’ was intended to create a matt finish within each diamond. However, this model did not meet with the expected success and was therefore replaced by the ‘Malmaison’ model (which is still in production today).
