JBC ODIOT, silversmith to Napoleon I Early 19th-century silver oil cruet by JBC ODIOT. Oval-shaped body, edged with a double frieze of leaves and resting on four ‘ball’ feet. Central handle featuring two facing snake heads. Set: a pair of carafes. Hallmarks: 1st Title (.950) known as ‘Vieillard’ and the Paris hallmark for 1819–38. Hallmarks of master goldsmith Jean-Baptiste Claude ODIOT (hallmark featuring his initials ‘JBCO’ and a blacksmith’s bellows), appointed in 1785, supplier to the Emperor. Height: 28.6 cm. Length: 23.7 cm. Width: 12.3 cm Vial dimensions: Height: 20.5 cm / Max. width: 10.5 cm / Base diameter: 5.5 cm Net weight of silver: 722 grams. Total weight (including flasks): 2,109 grams.
