Small, oblong, lidded silver box.
English hallmark for London, 1896–1901. Date letter ‘d’ for 1899.
Master silversmith’s mark: “WCJL”, probably for William GIBSON & John LANGMAN, members of the Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company.
Inscribed on the inside of the lid: “R.A.ARNOLD_ MEOPHAM COURT KENT”.
The ARNOLD family were based at Meopham Court. They were most recently represented by Major Ralph ARNOLD, son of George MATTHEW ARNOLD, who served as mayor of GRAVENSEND eight times and as a county councillor. Its members included the lawyer George ARNOLD (of Milton Hall, Kent), as well as Sir Arthur ARNOLD and Sir Edwin ARNOLD.
