Description
Adrien HEBRARD (1865–1937) and Henri HUSSON (1852–1914) for CHAMPAGNE VEUVE-CLIQUOT Commemorative goblet in the shape of a Gothic ciborium, made of vermeil (gold on silver). Commissioned for the fiftieth birthday of Alfred WERLE (1838–1907), head of the champagne house in 1906. The chalice bears the inscription (in Gothic script) applied to the surface: “Fiftieth anniversary of Alfred Werle_ m.d.ccc.m”. The base of the pedestal is decorated with vine shoots and bunches of grapes against an amati background. A multi-lobed base adorned with portraits of the champagne house’s former directors in slight relief (Madame CLIQUOT-PONSARDIN, Monsieur Edouard WERLE and Monsieur Alfred WERLE). The base also features the motto: “Tout vient du ciel” in applied lettering. First-title Minerva hallmark (body and base). Master goldsmith’s hallmark: (“AH” and Etruscan vase) for Adrien HEBRARD, active circa 1903–1922. Hallmark/stamp of Henri HUSSON: (neo-Gothic monogram). Stamp in full: “A.HEBRARD PARIS”. Each medallion monogrammed “P” (probably made by Pierre PALIN). H: 13.2 cm. Base diameter: 12.6 cm. Neck diameter: 12.9 cm. Weight: 448.7 grams.
