Description
LILLE 1753–55 Large three-legged chocolate pot in solid silver, decorated with pinched ribs. Side handle in blackened wood. A remarkably well-hallmarked piece bearing the LILLE hallmarks and guild marks for LILLE 1753–55 (crowned ‘M’). Hallmarks (appearing eight times) of the master silversmith and jeweller: Claude-François-Joseph CHARLES, admitted to the guild in 1743. Height: 29 cm. Max. width: approx. 28 cm Weight: 1001 grams. A chocolate pot of the same model and from the same period, by master goldsmith Pierre PONTUS, is featured in Mrs CARTIER’s reference work, on page 132 of Volume I (ref. 30).
