Description
INCUNABULUM. GIUSTINIANI (San Lorenzo): *Doctrina del Beato Lorenzo, Patriarch of Monastic Life*. S. l. (Venice), Benali, 1494; In-4° format, 114 unnumbered folios, full fawn calfskin, spine with four raised bands featuring a blind-stamped design of double crossed fillets, covers decorated with a broad lace pattern and a half-circle of small flowers. Copper corner pieces and central cabochon, clasp. A very fine copy in an exceptional state of preservation of Giustiniani’s original edition of *San Laurenzo*, an important text for the study of monastic orders. This edition is illustrated with three woodcuts, the blocks for which were also used in other editions; one depicts Saint John the Baptist and Saint Peter supporting Christ, and the other depicts Saint John and Saint Francis supporting the name of Mary. The woodcut on the reverse of folio 2 depicts San Laurenzo de Giustiniani preceded by an altar boy carrying the processional cross. This figure is based on a painting by Bellini held at the Accademia in Venice. - Bound together with this volume are: CLIMACUS (Johannes): *Sancto Iovanni Climacho Altrimenti Scala Paradisi*… etc., Venice, 1492; in 4° format, comprising 98 unnumbered folios. This incunabulum first edition is adorned with two woodcuts, one depicting the Preaching of Saint John Climacus and the other the Deposition. This copy is preserved in a slipcase. From the library of Charles William Dyson Perrins (1864–1958), a distinguished English bibliophile.
