THUCYDIDES: The History of Thucydides the Athenian, concerning the War between the Peloponnesians and the Athenians, translated into French by the late Sir Claude de Seyssel, formerly Bishop of Marseille and subsequently Archbishop of Turin. Paris, Josse Badius, 10 August 1527;
In folio, XVI, 281 pp. and one blank folio, fawn calfskin, spine with eight raised bands decorated with gilt fillets and gold fleurons, covers richly decorated with straight and curved bands and interlacing patterns, featuring compartments of mosaic in pastel pink, bottle green and ivory wax; gilded decorative motifs at the centre of the covers; bands and ornaments on the edges, which are chiselled and gilded. A magnificent copy, perfectly preserved in this beautiful 16th-century binding. (Laces missing). A very well-printed first edition of the first French translation of Thucydides by Claude de Seyssel (1450–1520), edited by Jacques Colin. In this edition, Laurent Valla’s prologue is preceded by a short poem by Clément Marot. The title is set within a beautiful frame. The initial at the start of each chapter is contained within a beautiful engraved initial letter. Several old signatures; a copy with wide margins. Renouard, Badius III, 304.2.
