ROME. MARIANI (Giovanni Bartholomeo): *Topographia Antiquae Romae*. Lyon, Sébastien Gryphe, 1534; 12mo, full dark red morocco, spine with 5 raised bands, gilt fillet on the edges, tooth mark. Inside, gilt edges, slipcase. Binding by René Aussourd. First Latin edition of this rare work published by Rabelais, with a lengthy preface by Rabelais himself in Latin addressed to Jean du Bellay, Bishop of Paris, 5 pp., ending with the inscription ‘Lugduni Pridie Cal. Septemb. 1534’. A very complete copy, including the 13-page index, at the end of which there is a handwritten note (From the library of the Petit Séminaire de Niort). A fine copy despite some old marginal water stains on numerous folios and a wormhole in the upper margin.
