CRENNE (Helisenne de): *Les Angoysses Douloureuses qui procedent Damours*. No place, no date (Lyon, Denys de Harsy, c. 1539). 8vo, red morocco, gilt fillets, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fillets, endpapers lined with blue morocco featuring rich gilt lace, blue cloth endpapers, gilt edges. Bound by BLANCHETIERE-BRETAULT. A very rare first Lyon edition of this autobiographical novel, regarded as the first French sentimental novel. It follows shortly after the original edition, published in Paris in 1538. The volume is illustrated with 60 woodcuts within the text and bears the typographical mark of Denys de Harsy, repeated on each of the three title pages. *Les Angoisses douloureuses* is the work of Marguerite Briet (1510–1560?), wife of Philippe Fournet, Lord of Crenne, a learned woman of Picard origin who recounts the disappointments of her love life, the joys of clandestine love and ‘exhorts all people not to pursue foolish loves’. A very complete copy of the final quire of 8 ff. containing *Ample narration faicte par Quezinstra en regardant la mort de son compaignon Quenelio*. Gültlingen, IV, 152, no. 185 – Baudrier, Suppl.
