ALBERTI (Leone Baptista): *The Architecture and Art of Building Well* by Lord Leon Baptista Alberti, a Florentine gentleman, divided into ten books Translated from Latin into French by the late Ian Martin, a Parisian who was formerly Secretary to His Most Reverend Cardinal de Lenoncourt. Paris, Jaques Kerver, 1553; folio of 8 unnumbered folios, 228 numbered folios, brown calfskin, spine with six decorated raised bands, double gilt fillet on the covers. Contemporary binding. First edition of the first French edition, published by Denis Sauvage following the death of Jean Martin. The title is printed. Set within a beautiful woodcut frame, featuring a portrait of Alberti on the verso. This edition is illustrated with numerous woodcuts, some full-page, as well as beautiful initials and engraved headpieces. Among the preliminary pages is Ronsard’s long epitaph for Jean Martin, in its original version comprising 126 lines. This copy is complete with the two engraved figures of the tower, ff. 167 and 168, and the double plate of the Baths of Diocletian, on the verso of f. 184 and f. 185. (Folios 187 and 188, which are detached, show wear to the paper at the margin; there is a tear on folio 164, incorrectly numbered 146, and the hinges are scuffed).
