Description
REFORMATION. CALVIN (Jehan): *Psychopannychia*. A treatise proving that souls remain awake and alive after they have left their bodies, refuting the error of certain ignorant people who believe that they sleep until the Last Judgement. S. L. (Geneva), Conrad Badius, 1558; 12mo, olive morocco, decorated ribbed spine, triple gilt fillet on the covers, gilt edges. 18th-century binding. This edition reproduces the critique formulated by Calvin in Orléans in 1534 against the errors of the Anabaptists, who, according to him, maintained that the souls of the deceased remain asleep until the Last Judgement. An extremely rare edition; the title page is illustrated with an engraved vignette depicting a printer’s workshop. (Very slight water damage affects the last 4 folios.)
