Description
DU VERDIER (Antoine): *Les Omonimes*, a satire on the corrupt morals of this century. Lyon, Antoine Gryphe, 1572; In 4°, red morocco, ribbed spine, bibliophile Louis Brun’s mark on the covers. Binding by CHAMBOLLE-DURU. A rare first edition of this poem in which each pair of lines ends with homonymous rhymes, lending itself to a smile. A fine title page bearing Antoine Gryphe’s mark; the second folio contains a two-page ‘Notice to the Reader’ by Antoine du Verdier, dated 1569; the third folio is a sonnet addressed to Du Verdier by J. de Chevigny, a native of Beaune, whilst on the verso of this folio there is a laudatory sonnet on the poem by F. de Belleforest. *Les Omonimes* occupies pages 4 to 12. Antoine du Verdier, a gentleman in the King’s household, writes in this poem a satire on the customs of the time. Baudrier, VIII-359; Brunet, II-928. From the libraries of Am.
