CHINA. KIRCHER (Athanasius): Athanasii Kircheri E Soc. Jesu China Momumentis, qua sacris qua Profanis, nec, non, variis, Naturae & Artis Spectaculis… Amsterdam, Apud Jacobum a Meurs, 1667; In folio, pale calfskin, ribbed spine, title label in red morocco, double row of double embossed fillets on the covers, separated by fleurons, red edges. Contemporary binding. A fine copy of the first edition of the most famous work on China, published in the 17th century and translated into French in 1670. The volume is illustrated with the author’s portrait, a frontispiece, two fold-out maps, 22 plates at the end of the book and 52 figures within the text. It was Father Kircher who first brought the famous Xi’an inscription to the world’s attention. (Some wear to the binding).
