Description
WEINMANN (Johann Wilhelm) 1683–1741: *Phytanthoza-iconographia, sive Conspectus aliquot millium tam indigenarum quam exoticarum*. Regensburg, Lenz and Neubauer, (1735) 1737–1745;
4 substantial folio volumes, fawn calfskin, spine with seven highly decorated raised bands, title labels in green parchment, covers with gilt fillets and broad lace patterns separated by corner fleurons, marbled edges. Contemporary binding. FIRST EDITION of one of the most extensive and famous works ever published on flowers, plants and fruits; this is the first book in which the plates were produced using the mezzotint technique. Printed text. Set in two columns, alternating German text in Gothic type with Latin and French translations in italics. This copy comprises 1,023 plates, including 13 double-page plates; however, plates 836 and 843, in the fourth volume, are missing. They were clearly omitted during the original binding, as there is no trace of plates having been torn out or removed. A very fine copy; note the remarkable vibrancy of the colours in the plates. Nissen, 2126.
