RESTIF DE LA BRETONNE (Nicolas-Edme): *Les Posthumes*. Letters received after her husband’s death by his wife, who believes him to be in Florence. By the late Gazotte. – Printed in Paris, in-house; sold at Duchêne’s, 1802; 4 vols. in 12, with 1 frontispiece, (2) folios, (4), 5–356 pp. for vol. 1; 1 frontispiece, (3), 4–360 pp. for vol. 2; 1 frontispiece, (3), 4–360 pp. for vol. 3; 1 frontispiece, (3), 4 to 335-(1) pp., (18) ff. for vol. 4, brown half-maroquin with corner caps, spine with raised bands outlined in blind-stamped fillets. Later binding. First edition. The half-title page of the first volume reads: “Lettres du tombeau ou les Posthumes”. Regarded as one of the earliest erotic ‘science fiction’ novels, this book was begun in 1796. A complete copy featuring all four engraved frontispieces; pp. 117–123 of the first volume, “Histoire de l’origine de la mère d’Yfflasie”. A very complete copy of the rare four illustrations which, it is said, led to the book’s confiscation. From the libraries of Léontine Arman de Caillavet and Horace de Landau, bearing their bookplates.
