The Masters of the Poster. Paris, Imprimerie Chaix, 1896–1898; 3 vols., folio size, red half-shagreen with corner pieces. Preface by Roger Marx. A tribute to Jules Chéret (1836–1932), the father of the illustrated poster. Published by the Atelier Chaix, directed by Chéret, this work appeared monthly from December 1895 to November 1900 in instalments of four plates. It presents a selection of posters from the Belle Époque, a period described as the golden age of the poster. One in every four plates reproduces a work by Jules Chéret. 240 lithographed posters and 16 additional plates given as a bonus to subscribers. Among the artists featured are Pierre Bonnard, Jules Chéret, Eugène Grasset, Alphonse Mucha, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Théophile-Alexandre Steinlein, de Feure… The first three volumes only (with a slight difference in binding).
