Description
Birdcage clock with automatons, or ‘serinette’, attributed to Jaquet-Droz, late 18th century Gilded bronze and enamel, decorated with Saxon porcelain vases at the corners and medallions depicting courtly scenes against a red background. The cage forms an openwork dome and features a bird driven by a bellows mechanism. The lower section is adorned with a white enamelled dial displaying the hours in Roman numerals. The cage rests on claw-shaped feet encircling spheres. H 52 cm. Provenance: a Neuchâtel collection assembled between 1980 and 2010. Singing-bird clocks are among the greatest specialities of the clockmaker Pierre Jaquet-Droz. In keeping with 18th-century taste, these birds were most often canaries, which earned these creations the name ‘serinettes’. The remarkable complexity of these mechanisms, combined with their artistic refinement, makes them particularly sought-after collector’s items amongst enthusiasts and collectors of antique timepieces.
